The Magicians Wife: SYTYCD Edition

by

It is no secret that I choose to make my living teaching dance. Nothing in the world brings me more challenges and love than dance (minus being a mom and wife).

When people figure out that I have done some pretty cool stuff regarding dance the first thing out of their mouth is usually “Hey, you much watch ‘So You Think You Can Dance”. My initial response is “No, why would I?”

To this day I have never seen a full episode.

Of course, the person who asks the question follows it the SYTYCD question with a simple “Why?”. The answer is both complicated and simple at the same time: I don’t watch it because I don’t want it to effect my creativity as a dance teacher/choreographer.

I will watch a hip hop video on youtube every once in awhile, because I do appreciate the SYTYCD team’s effort and hard work and I agree, some of it is amazing… I just can’t watch it. To me, that’s like reading a book and copying everything word for word… Oh SNAP.

That’s why I don’t understand when magicians work their day around “Masters of Illusion”. Sure, its great but I only watch it if I know someone is going to be on it..or I avoid it completely for that same reason. I have never once seen my magician friends do a magic trick, and I’d personally like to keep it that way.

I’m not saying that I WOULD copy something I have seen on SYTYCD, but sometimes you will see something, forget about it and a few months later you are teaching a step that was “unintentionally inspired” by someone else’s choreography. I’m not about that. I never have been. I have worked long and hard on gaining my own style and staying true to myself, I believe that is what would make me an “artist.”

I am not saying that I do not watch dance shows. If someone invites me to a live dance show I jump to the chance to attend. I have had time to think about why this is. Live Theater vs. Television.

When I am at the theater I am fully engrossed in the whole experience, there truly are no second chances or video edits. People are all there for the same reason; to sit back and enjoy a show. With Television you can rewind, record, be in your jammies while drinking wine out of a box at the same time checking your facebook… not cool in  a live theater setting.

I could go on forever about this, but I am tired. I just got back from Disneyland and Teaching Dance… Til Next time.

Love,

Katie

RIGHT ON!!!TV sucks!!!and for magic on TV let me just say trick photography sucks!!!I would rush to see a live performance anytime. But I’m old school. It’s a moment of truth that involves everyone there. That’s why Illusions restaurant was so much fun when Chris,Mike Close,Homer,Dan Dagurt and many others work there.
